Widescreen support - new render system - new development choices
All right, I will tell you about the first changes that the game "Toziuha Night OotA" will have. And I will explain the reason for doing so.
First, Toziuha Night will stop using OpenGL-2 and will use a newer version: OpenGL-3, this will allow me to be able to add dynamic lights, glow, and other effects that will help to draw attention with a single glance to new potential buyers, so I hope to be able to get some light effects like "dead cells" or "hollow knight" (maybe). But there is a problem with this, this version of opengl will not be compatible with too old computers, so if a computer can't even support windows 7-8, Toziuha Night may not be compatible. This will also affect mostly mobile devices, Opengl-3 works fine since android 9 in my experience with samsung phones (starting with the mighty J2 Prime).
Second, the game will make use of more action buttons: Now that I have a gamepad I can notice all the advantages this offers, so the game controls will have more buttons. In fact I have assigned almost all of them to a specific action, I just need to find a use for the LT and RT triggers. So playing with a gamepad may give more advantages over those who will use a keyboard.
Third, the internal resolution of the game will increase. Currently the game runs at a resolution of 683x384px. This is not a problem for pixelart sprites, but when I want to add the visual effects I mentioned above this will lower the resolution of those effects, or any hd image (if you want an example, see the fantarts gallery in OotA). So I've decided to use a wider resolution, taking as an example the most standard: 1280x720px. (the resolution on Nintendo Switch for example) And the pixelart sprites will be scaled within the game to 4x.
Fourth, I will add widescreen support by changing the way the game renders the gameplay. This is something that on android many have noticed: the black bars on the sides of the screen. I haven't given widescreen support for the sole reason that on wide screens, the camera would show more than it should (for example, the limits of a room). So I've been programming a way to give widescreen support, but at the same time create an overlay around it to hide what I don't want them to see, this will also be beneficial for android, since players this time will be able to place the touch buttons outside the gameplay screen. You can see the video where the new overlay is shown. This is something I have programmed myself, as there is no information on the internet on how to do it.
Fifth, I will focus my efforts only on developing the game for PC (windows-linux). This is to save development time, once the game is finished, I will work on porting the game to android.
Sixth, I got a new pixelart font that supports many languages! Including the most popular languages (English, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Russian etc) So this font will be used in 90% of the game.
Seventh, the game will be a closed beta only available to a selected group of people on Steam. The people will be chosen by me from the most active members on discord, they will have a special key that will give them access to the game before it is released in the store. More details in a month.
